Born on March 14, 1997, in Columbus, Ohio, Simone Biles is a gymnastics prodigy who has become the most decorated gymnast in history. She was introduced to the sport at age 6 and began dominating at the junior elite level. Biles has won a record 37 Olympic and World Championship medals, including six all-around World titles and eight all-around U.S. Championships titles. She has also made history by introducing several groundbreaking moves in gymnastics, which have been named after her.
Biles' journey to success was not without challenges. She and her siblings entered foster care due to their mother's struggle with substance abuse. Eventually, her grandparents, Ron and Nellie, adopted Simone and her sister Adria, providing a supportive environment that nurtured her athletic talents.
Biles' career skyrocketed in 2013 when she won the U.S. and World Championships all-around titles in her first year at the senior elite level. She continued to dominate the sport, winning four gold medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics and two medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. However, she withdrew from most events at the Tokyo Olympics due to mental health concerns, sparking vital conversations about the immense pressure athletes face and their mental health challenges.
After a two-year break, Biles returned to competition in August 2023 and will next compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics. That makes Biles the first American gymnast since 2000 to have made three Olympic teams.
Off the mat, Biles is married to NFL player Jonathan Owens and has become an advocate for mental health. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2022.
